  • Colin Gillies

    17/04/2025

A sad day as we said goodbye to PGA Professional, all-time record money winner, colleague and friend Colin Gillies.

Miss me, but let me go' 🥲

A line from a poem read by the minister at Colin Gillies' funeral in Falkirk today and no surprise that his fellow PGA in Scotland pros were out in force to pay their respects to the Tartan Tour's all-time record money-winner.

  • Why Colin Gillies showed golf isn't all about playing at the top level

    31/03/2025
By Martin Dempster - The Scotsman

Golf correspondent Martin Dempster pays tribute to record Tartan Tour money-winner

It takes either a special player or a special person to get Scots around the world to unite in grief and, in the case of Colin Gillies, who passed away this week at the age of 58, that has happened because, to his credit, he ticked both those boxes.

When I first started to cover the Tartan Tour, the circuit run by the PGA in Scotland, in the mid-1980s, the likes of Russell Weir, John Chillas, Craig Maltman, Iain Collins, Kevin Stables and Alastair Webster were some of the leading lights.

It soon became apparent, though, that two young Scottish professionals were going to be challenging the old guard, so to speak, before too long and that did, indeed, prove to be the case.

  • Brian Waites passes away at 85 years old.

    11/03/2025
Brian Waites, who was the last traditional PGA Club Professional to play in the Ryder Cup and won twice on what has become the DP World Tour, has passed away at the age of 85.
Although several PGA Members, including Ian Poulter and Paul Lawrie, have played in the Ryder Cup after completing the Association’s training programme, Brian was the last who was working as a club professional when he earned selection to represent Europe in 1983.
Commenting on Brian’s career, PGA chief executive Robert Maxfield said: “Brian’s passing really marks the end of an era. The role of a PGA Professional has changed so much since the time Brian turned pro when it was possible to serve a club and excel at the highest level. What’s more Brian achieved his success at an elite level in his later years, which is unlikely to happen now.
"Throughout those years as a club pro and then on tour, Brian never forgot his calling as a PGA Member – not only have we lost a throwback to a different time but also a very good friend of the Association. Our thoughts go out to Brian’s wife Veronica and all his family members and friends."

  • 'Truly inspirational' Scottish hotelier dies age 77

    24/01/2025

Well-known Aberdeen hotelier, Stewart Spence MBE, has died age 77.

Mr Spence owned a number of hotels in the city during his career, most notably the celebrated Marcliffe.

His son Ross had held the managing director position after his father's retirement in 2021. The Spence family sold the hotel to the Balmoral Group last summer.

Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels' Association chairman Frank Whitaker described the news of Mr Spence's death as "truly the passing of an icon".

Mr Spence was awarded an MBE for services to tourism in 2015.

"The hotel community in Aberdeen and the north east is saddened by the loss of a truly inspirational hotelier," industry spokesman Mr Whitaker said.

"Stewart was a real professional, recognising at an early stage that Aberdeen needed to work hard together to have legacy success from a burgeoning oil industry."

He said Mr Spence positioned The Marcliffe as "Aberdeen's luxury place to stay".

Mr Whitaker added: "He was a towering figure in the region's hotel world and many of us in the industry would be proud to leave a fraction of the legacy that he has.

"We extend our deepest condolences to Stewart's family."

      'Continue his legacy'

Sir Jim Milne, chairman of Balmoral Group, added: "Maintaining the quality and standards that he set at The Marcliffe is of the utmost importance to us.

"Stewart was recognised as one of the best hoteliers in Scotland, and it's through his work that we have strong foundations to continue his legacy."

The popular venue for wedding receptions and functions has been at North Deeside Road since 1993.

The Marcliffe was opened by Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, who was in the city to receive the Freedom of Aberdeen.
